Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces that were in the fields came to Gedaliah to Mizpah as part of the remnant of Jews who gathered in Judah after Jerusalem's fall when the king of Babylon carried the nation into captivity. It stands at the beginning of the closing chapters of Jeremiah, which are instructive and cover Jeremiah's personal experiences and his going into Egypt.
In the suggested chronological order of Jeremiah it is placed after the accounts of Zedekiah's reign, belonging to the events after Jerusalem's fall. In one presentation it is grouped as history from the period before Jerusalem's fall, within the material associated with Gedaliah's reign.
As part of Jeremiah 40 to 45, in chronological order it follows Jeremiah 39:1-14 and comes before Jeremiah 47. Jeremiah's prophecies after chapter 20 are not placed in chronological order because of the gathering of the manuscript rolls into one book, which makes no change in the teaching, and the chapter itself nearly always clearly indicates its chronology. The king of Ammon was the power that later dispersed this remnant gathered in Judah.
