Jeremiah 40:16

But Gedaliah the son of Ahikam said unto Johanan the son of Kareah, Thou shalt not do this thing: for thou speakest falsely of Ishmael.

Gedaliah the son of Ahikam forbids Johanan the son of Kareah to do the thing proposed, rejecting the warning that Ishmael intends to kill him. He refuses to believe the report of Ishmael's plan and charges Johanan with speaking falsely about Ishmael. The verse stands within the section of Jeremiah covering the history of the two years before Jerusalem fell.
