Jeremiah 40:3
Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you. Now the LORD hath brought it, and done according as he hath said: because ye have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed his voice, therefore this thing is come upon you.
The Lord himself brought the calamity upon Jerusalem and Judah and did exactly as he had said. It came because the people had sinned against the Lord and had not obeyed his voice. The fall of Jerusalem was thus the fulfillment of his word and warning, and the disaster arrived as the direct consequence of disobedience.
The verse stands in the closing chapters of the book of Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, which deal with his personal experiences and his going into Egypt. In time it comes after the account of Jerusalem's fall in 39:1-14. As part of chapters 40 to 45 it follows chapters 38 and 39 and precedes chapter 47, so chapter 40 follows the fall and comes before the later events in chapters 41 to 44.
The prophecies of Jeremiah are not arranged in chronological order because of the way the manuscript rolls were gathered together into one book. This displacement makes no change in the teaching. The chronology is nearly always clearly indicated by the chapter itself.
