Jeremiah 40:7
Now when all the captains of the forces which were in the fields, even they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam governor in the land, and had committed unto him men, and women, and children, and of the poor of the land, of them that were not carried away captive to Babylon;
Jeremiah 40:7 belongs to the account of the Jews who remained in the land after Zedekiah's captivity and later fled to Egypt. It falls within the section of Jeremiah that records history from the two years before Jerusalem's fall. It lies in the block of chapters 40 to 45 that comes after Jeremiah 39 in chronological order, with Jeremiah 39:15-18 coming before Jeremiah 39:1-14. The prophecies of Jeremiah after chapter 20 are not placed in chronological order because of the gathering of the manuscript rolls into one book, but the displacement makes no change in the teaching and the chronology is nearly always clear from the chapter itself.
