Jeremiah 41:15

But Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escaped from Johanan with eight men, and went to the Ammonites.

Jeremiah 32 to 45 gives the history of the two years before the fall of Jerusalem, and this verse belongs to that section. In the suggested chronological order of Jeremiah's prophecies and historical accounts, chapter 41 belongs after the events of chapter 40 and before those of chapters 42 to 44. The chapter records the assassination of Gedaliah at Mizpeh, the Jewish viceroy left by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, after the destruction of Jerusalem. In the verse itself Ishmael the son of Nethaniah escapes from Johanan with eight men and goes to the Ammonites.

These events dispersed the remnant of Jews who had been left in Judah after Babylon carried the nation into captivity. These events were the reason for the fast observed in the seventh month. The murder of Gedaliah is commemorated by the Fast of Gedaliah kept on Tisri 3, one of four fasts commemorating the fall of Jerusalem and kept from daybreak.
