Jeremiah 41:16

Then took Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, all the remnant of the people whom he had recovered from Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, from Mizpah, after that he had slain Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, even mighty men of war, and the women, and the children, and the eunuchs, whom he had brought again from Gibeon:

Jeremiah 41:16 belongs to Jeremiah 32 to 45, which give the history of the two years before the fall of Jerusalem. In chronological order the chapter follows chapter 40 and belongs to the portion uttered during and connected with the rule of Gedaliah and its aftermath. It concerns the remnant of Jews left in the land by the Babylonian king Nebuchadnezzar after Zedekiah's captivity and the destruction of Jerusalem, under Gedaliah as Jewish viceroy.

It describes how, after Ishmael slew Gedaliah at Mizpah, Johanan recovered the remnant from Ishmael and gathered the dispersed people who then fled into Egypt. The disaster of Gedaliah's assassination and the dispersal of the remnant was commemorated by a fast in the seventh month. That commemoration is known as the Fast of Gedaliah on Tisri 3, which begins at daybreak.
