Jeremiah 41:17

And they departed, and dwelt in the habitation of Chimham, which is by Beth-lehem, to go to enter into Egypt,

Jeremiah 41 belongs to the closing chapters that recount Jeremiah's personal experiences and the events surrounding his going into Egypt. In chronological order Jeremiah 41:17 comes after Jeremiah 40 and belongs to the events following the assassination of Gedaliah, recording the survivors' move to Chimham's lodging near Bethlehem as they prepared to go to Egypt. The chapter records the assassination at Mizpah of Gedaliah, the Jewish viceroy left by Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, after the destruction of Jerusalem, and the resulting dispersion of the remnant he had left. The verse records that the surviving Jews departed and halted at the habitation of Chimham by Bethlehem while preparing to enter Egypt, marking the flight and dispersion of Judah's remaining people after the fall of Jerusalem and Babylon's carrying of the nation into exile. That flight toward Egypt went against Jeremiah's counsel to remain in the land under Babylonian protection.

Chimham's lodging near Bethlehem was a stopping place where travelers stayed before going to Egypt, and it may have still been there as the inn at the time of Jesus' birth. Gedaliah's assassination and the resulting dispersion gave rise to the Jews' fast in the seventh month. The murder of Gedaliah is commemorated by the Fast of Gedaliah on Tisri 3, one of the four fasts commemorating events connected with the fall of Jerusalem. Like the other three fasts except Ab 9, it begins at daybreak.
