Jeremiah 41:8
But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren. But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not: for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey. So he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren.
Jeremiah 41:8 stands in chapters 40 to 45, which come after Jeremiah 39:1-14 in chronological order though placed after it in the book, and more broadly in chapters 32 to 45, which give the history of the two years before the fall of Jerusalem. The prophecies after chapter 20 are not in chronological order because of the way the manuscript rolls were gathered together into one book. This displacement makes no change in teaching, and the chapter itself clearly shows its own time. The verse belongs to the portion of the book given during the rule of Gedaliah.
Gedaliah was the Jewish viceroy left by Nebuchadnezzar after the destruction of Jerusalem. Eighty men came to see Gedaliah at Mizpeh, and Ishmael, having already killed Gedaliah, killed seventy of the visitors but spared ten who offered him treasures in the field of wheat and barley and oil and honey. The assassination and the killings belong to the dispersion of the remnant of Jews left by the king of Babylon gathered in Judah after the nation was carried away, brought about through the king of Ammon. These events prompted the Jews to observe a fast in the seventh month in memory of that murder, kept as the Fast of Gedaliah on Tisri 3, a day fast beginning at daybreak.
