Jeremiah 42:14

Saying, No; but we will go into the land of Egypt, where we shall see no war, nor hear the sound of the trumpet, nor have hunger of bread; and there will we dwell:

Jeremiah 42:14 belongs to the events in the days of Zedekiah and stands after chapters 40 and 41 in chronological order. It records the people's stated intention to go into the land of Egypt to dwell and settle there. They expected there to see no war, to hear no sound of the trumpet of battle, and to have no hunger of bread.

They carried out this desire by going to dwell at Tahpanhes, because they feared Nebuchadnezzar would return to Jerusalem and destroy them. This plan was contrary to God's direction through Jeremiah to remain in the land of Judah. Jeremiah protested against their decision by the Lord's command.

Their hearts were already set on Egypt and they wanted counsel to match their own plans. Their request for guidance was therefore insincere prayer spoken only with the lips and not from a sincere heart. The call to remain in Judah and trust God tested whether they would obey Him. God promised protection and blessing if they abandoned the journey to Egypt. Their flight to Egypt was futile. Their choice was disobedience for which they were punished.
