Jeremiah 42:16
Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die. Then it shall come to pass, that the sword, which ye feared, shall overtake you there in the land of Egypt, and the famine, whereof ye were afraid, shall follow close after you there in Egypt; and there ye shall die.
Jeremiah 42:16 belongs to the account of Jeremiah's personal experiences and his going into Egypt. It belongs to the history of the two years before Jerusalem's fall. It warns the remnant of Judah who fled to Egypt that the sword they feared would overtake them there and the famine they were afraid of would follow close after them there, and there they would die.
That flight to Egypt was futile because Egypt would not protect them from the danger they feared, despite Jeremiah's protest against their decision to flee. Going to Egypt was against God's direction. Their disobedience and their false charge that Baruch had influenced Jeremiah were part of the wickedness for which God brought their destruction. Jeremiah predicted Egypt's defeat by Babylon.
