Jeremiah 42:17

So shall it be with all the men that set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn there; they shall die by the sword, by the famine, and by the pestilence: and none of them shall remain or escape from the evil that I will bring upon them.

All who set their faces to go into Egypt to sojourn and settle there will die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence. None of them will remain or escape from the evil that God will bring upon them.

The warning was God's direction through Jeremiah to the remnant of Judah to remain in the land. They had inquired of him, but they had already decided to go to Egypt and sought his approval rather than his guidance. Their leaders took them to Tahpanhes despite Jeremiah's strong protest, acting against the Lord's command.

Their dismissal of the message as spoken under Baruch's influence was a serious rejection of God's message. Their plans were futile, and God brought the predicted destruction upon them, including Egypt's defeat. The account warns that God cannot hear and bless people who speak to Him without meaning what they say, praying only with their lips while their hearts are elsewhere.
