Jeremiah 43:11
And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword. And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword.
Jeremiah 43:11 falls within chapters 32-45, which describe events in the two years before Jerusalem fell. It belongs to Jeremiah's prophecy that Egypt would be defeated and fall before Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon, who would come and strike the land of Egypt. The prophecy warned the remnant of the Jews left in Judea after the captivity, who inquired of God through Jeremiah and then went down to Egypt contrary to his direction, that their flight there would not make their plans succeed but would bring utter destruction upon them. That destruction is apportioned by appointed judgment, with the conqueror delivering each person to the fate destined for him, such as are for death to death, and such as are for captivity to captivity, and such as are for the sword to the sword.
The setting at Tahpanhes involved a paved area where Nebuchadnezzar had captives pass before him and assigned them to suitable kinds of labor. This was like David putting captives to work rather than cruelly executing them.
The remnant's charge that Jeremiah spoke not the word of God but what Baruch, who was intimately connected with him in God's work, influenced him to speak was a great sin of suspicion and unbelief against God's called prophet and true prophetic mission, for which God punished them. The same serious sin is committed when those professing to accept the manifestation of the spirit of prophecy claim that unwelcome decisions were influenced by those intimately connected with it, since God never chooses a medium to speak directly to a people while allowing another contrary human influence to palm itself off as the Spirit and work of God.
