Jeremiah 44:14

So that none of the remnant of Judah, which are gone into the land of Egypt to sojourn there, shall escape or remain, that they should return into the land of Judah, to the which they have a desire to return to dwell there: for none shall return but such as shall escape.

The verse concerns the Jews left in the land after Zedekiah's captivity, and it belongs to Jeremiah's prophecies about events after Judah's fall, in the historical sequence leading through the restoration from Babylon. When they came to Jeremiah for counsel about going to Egypt, they were insincere, unable to discern between right and wrong, making empty promises and wanting only advice in harmony with their own wish to go. If they had remained in the land under the king of Babylon and heeded Jeremiah's voice, they would have had every necessary protection, since the king had learned to highly esteem Jeremiah, but they rejected that counsel.

Although they had a desire to return to the land of Judah to dwell and live there, nearly all of the remnant who went into the land of Egypt to sojourn there would not succeed in their flight and would neither escape the coming disaster nor remain to return. Only a few survivors and fugitives, such as escape the judgment, would return, and the margin of the verse holds out that remaining hope of return for those who humbled themselves before God. In Egypt many of them went into idolatry. Their plans were futile because Egypt would be defeated and Nebuchadnezzar would set his standard in the capital of Egypt.
