Jeremiah 44:21
The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind? The incense that ye burned in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerusalem, ye, and your fathers, your kings, and your princes, and the people of the land, did not the LORD remember them, and came it not into his mind?
Jeremiah 44:21 stands in the historical section of Jeremiah, chapters 32-45, which records the events of the two years before Jerusalem fell. It declares that the LORD remembered and took to mind the incense burned in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem by the people, their fathers, their kings, their princes, and the people of the land. That remembrance reached back to offerings made by earlier generations, so that none of their idolatrous worship was hidden from Him but was known to Him.
The incense thus remembered included worship of the queen of heaven, which is sun worship. That idolatry was bound up with punishment as part of the evil whose consequences the people were suffering in captivity and exile. Such idolatrous worship and false education among their own people and kings brought sad results, whose fruit the Judean youth were reaping in captivity and enforced exile while beloved Zion lay in utter ruin. Their rejection of Jeremiah's warning and persistence in idolatry brought desolation upon the land, and that disaster is connected with forgetting God by disregarding the Sabbath.
