Jeremiah 44:8

In that ye provoke me unto wrath with the works of your hands, burning incense unto other gods in the land of Egypt, whither ye be gone to dwell, that ye might cut yourselves off, and that ye might be a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth?

The verse is spoken to the remnant left in the land after Zedekiah's captivity, who went to dwell in Egypt against the counsel God gave through Jeremiah. Before going they came to Jeremiah for counsel, but their seeking was insincere, for they were unable to discern between right and wrong and their promises were empty. They wanted only counsel that agreed with their own wishes and purposes, while the discernment of the Spirit laid bare the secrets of their hearts. They should have remained in the land under the king of Babylon, who had learned to highly esteem Jeremiah and would have given them every necessary protection as long as they heeded Jeremiah's voice.

Instead they chose to go down into Egypt, where many eagerly gave themselves to burning incense to other gods. By that worship in the land where they had gone to dwell they provoked God to wrath, to cut themselves off in destruction. That course made them a curse and a reproach among all the nations of the earth, bringing disgrace upon themselves. Jeremiah answered by declaring the futility of their plans and prophesying the defeat of Egypt, even naming the very place in its capital where Nebuchadnezzar would set up his throne.
