Jeremiah 46:22

The voice thereof shall go like a serpent; for they shall march with an army, and come against her with axes, as hewers of wood.

Jeremiah 46:22 belongs to Jeremiah's prophecy concerning Egypt and its fall before the mighty conqueror Nebuchadnezzar. It stands in the closing chapters of Jeremiah that cover his personal experiences and his going into Egypt. There it stands alongside prophecies against Moab, Ammon, Edom, Damascus and Elam, and alongside prophecies concerning Babylon and the doom of Babylon. The word rendered with denotes working with a tool, meaning the attackers come against Egypt using axes as hewers of wood use them. The verse means Egypt would be invaded, subdued, and fall before Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon.

Beyond that conquest, the passage foretells Egypt's future revolutions and condition as successively subjected to Persians, Macedonians, Romans, Saracens, Mamelukes, and Turks. It was to be spoiled and ruled by strangers forever, made the basest of kingdoms that would no more rule over the nations. Its rivers were to dry, and its idols and native princes were to cease. Its fulfillment through more than twenty-four centuries proves the Bible true.
