Jeremiah 46:4
Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines. Harness the horses; and get up, ye horsemen, and stand forth with your helmets; furbish the spears, and put on the brigandines.
Jeremiah 46:4 is part of a prophecy against Egypt, one of the nations judged in Jeremiah 46-51 where doom is pronounced upon the kingdoms surrounding Israel. The chapter belongs to the closing chapters of Jeremiah covering his own personal experiences and his going into Egypt. It prophesies concerning Egypt, though one of the most ancient and powerful and most defensible kingdoms in the world, that it was to fall before the mighty conqueror Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, by whom it would be invaded and subdued.
After that conquest Egypt would be spoiled and subjected to strangers forever, no more ruling over the nations, becoming the basest of the kingdoms, with its idols and images ceasing out of Noph. That conquest by Nebuchadnezzar was fulfilled and was followed by successive rule by Persians, Macedonians under Alexander the Great, Ptolemies, Romans, Saracens, Mamelukes, and Turks. This left Egypt in slavery, tyranny, poverty and idolless desolation for centuries, proving the prophecy true over more than twenty-four centuries.
