Jeremiah 49:11

Leave thy fatherless children, I will preserve them alive; and let thy widows trust in me.

The promise is that children left without a father will be kept alive, and widows are bidden to put their trust in God. Widows are assured that God Himself will watch over them and preserve them. The pledge is not limited to those literally bereft of a father, but reaches also to children deprived of parental care. That divine care is worked out through human hearts that put away selfishness and exercise Christlike love, for the bereaved and needy are committed in trust to His followers.

The need of such children is to be supplied by personal care in loving Christian homes, not abandoned to institutions or to the accidents of charity. Confidence in the faithfulness of that promise gives a widow strength to lean upon Him. Even while her husband is away, she may find comfort and peace through communion with Him.
