The closing part of Jeremiah holds prophecies against Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, Damascus, and above all Babylon. Within that series this word belongs to the prophecies concerning the nations, including Edom, that were to fall before Nebuchadnezzar. Babylon there means not simply the ancient empire but a type of mystical Babylon, the kingdom that perverted all the other kingdoms of the earth.
