Jeremiah 49:18
As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it. As in the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighbour cities thereof, saith the LORD, no man shall abide there, neither shall a son of man dwell in it.
The judgment leaves the place empty of dwellers, with no man abiding there and no son of man making his home in it. The measure of that emptiness is the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, whose condition after destruction sets the pattern for what will follow here. That pattern embraces the neighboring cities as well, so the desolation covers both the chief cities and those round about them.
Edom is the land so judged, foretold to be left desolate with no one living there. Its capital Petra is the fulfillment, still standing with its houses and theatre and columns and gateways, yet without inhabitants.
