Jeremiah 49:22

Behold, he shall come up and fly as the eagle, and spread his wings over Bozrah: and at that day shall the heart of the mighty men of Edom be as the heart of a woman in her pangs.

The verse stands in that portion of Jeremiah which pronounces judgments upon foreign nations, with Babylon prominent among them. That portion of the book speaks through striking symbols and figures of speech. Within it the verse belongs to the word against Edom, whose power was to fall before Nebuchadnezzar.

The rising and flying like the eagle and the spreading of wings over Bozrah portray a conquering attacker swooping upon Edom. The wings of the eagle picture speed and the ability to reach places that seem inaccessible. The onset brings such terror that in that day the heart of the mighty men of Edom becomes helpless as the heart of a woman in her pangs.
