Jeremiah 49:7

Concerning Edom, thus saith the LORD of hosts; Is wisdom no more in Teman? is counsel perished from the prudent? is their wisdom vanished?

Jeremiah 49:7 stands within the closing prophecies of Jeremiah in chapters 46 to 51. Those chapters pronounce judgments against Egypt, Philistia, Moab, Ammon, and Damascus. Above all they are directed against Babylon, which is regarded not only as the ancient empire but as a type of mystical Babylon.

The question put concerning Edom is whether wisdom is no more in Teman and whether counsel has perished from the prudent. It asks in particular whether wisdom and counsel have disappeared from Edom, with Teman singled out because it was known for its wise people. Teman was noted as a place of wise men. Eliphaz, the son of Esau, is associated with Teman, which was named after his own son Teman.
