Jeremiah 49:9

If grapegatherers come to thee, would they not leave some gleaning grapes? if thieves by night, they will destroy till they have enough.

Grape pickers in the ordinary course leave a portion of gleanings still on the vines rather than stripping everything clean. Night thieves likewise limit their plundering to what is sufficient to meet their own desire and then stop. Both cases are set as examples of restrained taking in order to throw into relief the far more complete devastation belonging to the judgment in view.
