Jeremiah 5:16

Their quiver is as an open sepulchre, they are all mighty men.

The declaration belongs to the divine warning that Babylon would be sent against Jerusalem as judgment. The invader is announced in advance, so that the city is confronted with the certainty of a foreign power raised up to come upon it. Its quiver is likened to an uncovered burial place, a container of arrows that speaks of death opened and waiting for victims. Its soldiers are all powerful fighting men, leaving no impression of weakness or division but of united strength fitted for conquest. Together the two images present an enemy both lethal in its weapons and overwhelming in its personnel.
