Jeremiah 5:17

And they shall eat up thine harvest, and thy bread, which thy sons and thy daughters should eat: they shall eat up thy flocks and thine herds: they shall eat up thy vines and thy fig trees: they shall impoverish thy fenced cities, wherein thou trustedst, with the sword.

Jeremiah 5:17 belongs among the prophet's denunciations of sin and warnings of judgment upon the people, given as a call for Judah to turn back to God. The judgment it foretells would come through a foreign invasion, in which the enemy would consume the people's harvest and bread, even the food meant for their sons and daughters to eat. Those invaders would eat up their flocks and herds and take their livestock, and would destroy their crops, their vines and their fig trees. They would impoverish with the sword the fenced, fortified cities in which the people trusted, defeating them utterly.

The people's refusal to heed this warning led to the destruction of Jerusalem and their captivity in Babylon.
