Jeremiah 5:25

Your iniquities have turned away these things, and your sins have withholden good things from you.

Iniquities and sins turn away blessings and withhold good things from God's people. Sin keeps them from receiving the good that would otherwise come to them.

In its setting the sins include wicked men lying in wait as one who sets snares, laying traps to catch others like hunters catching men. They also include growing rich through deceit and denying justice to the fatherless and needy. Such wrongs help degrade people whom God seeks to uplift and bring the prospect of divine judgment.

The condition described produces an alarming state in the churches. Its setting also includes prophets prophesying falsely and priests bearing rule by their means, while the people love to have it so, leaving the solemn question what they will do in the end thereof. It warns that God will surely fulfill His word against those who will not hear, will not see, and refuse the light He sends them.
