Jeremiah 5:26

For among my people are found wicked men: they lay wait, as he that setteth snares; they set a trap, they catch men.

Among God's own professed people are found wicked men who lie in wait and secretly set traps to catch people just as a hunter sets snares for prey. Those trap-setters exploit and degrade for their own gain the very people God seeks to uplift, catching them in self-serving schemes. As applied to the present, this warns that such corruption and opposition to truth exist in the churches.

The verse describes the alarming present condition of the churches, where iniquities have turned away blessing and sins have withheld good things. Prophets prophesy falsely and priests rule by their own means while the people love to have it so, with only a slight healing of the hurt and a cry of peace when there is no peace, leaving the question of what they will do in the end. God will surely fulfill His word to do to His house as He did to Shiloh and to cast out of His sight those who will not hear and see but refuse the light He sends them.
