Babylon with the Ishtar Gate and Hanging Gardensby Stephenoch

Jeremiah 51:13

O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, and the measure of thy covetousness.

The utterance is a divine sentence of retribution pronounced directly against Babylon itself and against its ruler. It is spoken to one dwelling upon many waters and abundant in treasures, yet declaring that her appointed end has come and the measure of her covetousness is full. Its meaning is that proud and cruel oppression joined with greed for gain brings a kingdom to its appointed end. Babylon falls because, instead of protecting those she ruled, she ruled them with force and cruelty and lived for covetous gain.
