Jeremiah 52:15
Then Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive certain of the poor of the people, and the residue of the people that remained in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.
Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard carried away captive to Babylon certain of the poor of the people, the residue that remained in the city, those that had fallen away to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude. This carrying away took place after Jerusalem was destroyed, when the Jewish nation had been greatly diminished. Only a small remnant escaped the sword to be carried captive, while surviving members of the royal family and priesthood and the surviving sanctuary vessels were also taken away.
The verse belongs to the closing chapters of Jeremiah, which recount his experiences and describe Jerusalem's suffering after the people turned from God. The destruction that includes this captivity came a few years after the warning that Jerusalem would stand forever if the people bore no burdens on the Sabbath but would be destroyed if they would not listen. This shows God's great condescension in calling His people to listen and obey Him in keeping His holy day.
The chapter to which the verse belongs illustrates that the daughters of Jerusalem, the daughters of Rabbah, and the daughters of Babylon form a part of their cities. So great mystic Babylon embraces all corrupt Christianity including her daughters, and when she rejected the announcement that the hour of judgment is come God left her by His Spirit. He calls His people to come out of her before her destruction as a millstone cast into the sea. The record of Jerusalem's fall and of Babylon's judgment serves as a biblical lesson that a city that defies God faces the consequences of its wickedness, warning cities and people who forget and defy God not to ignore warnings.
