Jeremiah 52:22
And a chapiter of brass was upon it; and the height of one chapiter was five cubits, with network and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about, all of brass. The second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these. And a chapiter of brass was upon it; and the height of one chapiter was five cubits, with network and pomegranates upon the chapiters round about, all of brass. The second pillar also and the pomegranates were like unto these.
The brass capital stood upon a pillar, and one capital measured five cubits in height, with latticework and pomegranates of brass encircling the capitals, and the second pillar with its pomegranates was made alike. This detail belongs to the record of Jerusalem's overthrow and removal to Babylon, when the temple vessels that escaped destruction were taken away together with survivors of the royal house and of the priesthood. Those carried captive formed only a small remnant of the Jewish nation, which had been greatly reduced by slaughter and scattering.
The ruin set forth in the chapter came because the people refused to hear and obey God concerning the observance of His holy Sabbath day. Jeremiah had foretold that if they carried no burdens on the Sabbath Jerusalem would endure forever, but that if they refused to hearken God would destroy it, and within a few years God brought that destruction to pass as this chapter records. So the chapter remains a lesson and warning to cities that forget and defy God.
