Jeremiah 52:26

So Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah.

Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard took the captured men and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah. The verse belongs to the account of Jerusalem's destruction and the removal of its surviving leaders into Babylonian custody. The deported remnant was only a small part of a nation numbering millions, for many were killed and few were carried away, and the surviving members of the royal family and priesthood were among those taken captive.

The destruction in Jeremiah 52 came a few years after God's warning through Jeremiah about the sacredness of the Sabbath. That warning was God's great condescension to His people. If they would listen and obey by bearing no burdens on the Sabbath, Jerusalem would stand forever, but if they would not hearken He would destroy it.

The verse is also presented as part of the account of Babylon's judgment and downfall. In that setting Jeremiah 52 stands as a lesson and warning to cities and places that forget and defy God that they face the consequences of their wickedness. The warning is that persistent defiance of God brings consequences when mercy and justice no longer restrain them.
