Jeremiah 6:13

For from the least of them even unto the greatest of them every one is given to covetousness; and from the prophet even unto the priest every one dealeth falsely.

The corruption is total, reaching every social level without exception, with all from the smallest to the greatest consumed by greed for gain and with both prophetic and priestly offices given over to false dealing. No rank escapes, for covetousness rules the people from least to greatest while deceit marks the religious leaders from prophet to priest alike. The once highly favored Jewish church thus became an astonishment and a reproach, because it failed to improve its blessings and was ruined by pride and unbelief.

That history is not confined to ancient Israel but portrays the character and condition of many nominally Christian churches. Those churches enjoy far greater blessings yet walk in the same steps, and their guilt is greater because their light and privileges are greater when left unimproved. The same corruption is repeated by those entrusted with sacred truth when they betray God's cause and hand it over to His enemies. It is likewise fulfilled in people entrusted with sacred responsibilities who betray those trusts and choose the world as their judge.
