Jeremiah 6:19
Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it. Hear, O earth: behold, I will bring evil upon this people, even the fruit of their thoughts, because they have not hearkened unto my words, nor to my law, but rejected it.
The evil to be brought upon the people is the fruit of their own thoughts, choices and deeds, coming because they did not hearken to divine words and law but rejected them. Calamity and disaster come in this way as the consequence of refusing to listen and heed. Suffering is what people themselves have sown, with actions, deeds and character bringing consequences back upon the one who does them.
Jerusalem's judgment illustrates this, with guilt and the consequences of rejected mercy resting on the people when they remain stubborn and impenitent. The same principle applies to those who claim to understand the Bible but do not obey it, showing their need for thorough reformation.
Refusal to turn from self-pleasing brings this outcome upon a woman, yet it need not happen if she repents, seeks grace, submits wholly to God, and lives to do His will. Likewise, a person who does not repent and turn from a self-centered life will face the consequences of that course, but repentance can prevent that outcome.
