Jeremiah 6:21

Therefore thus saith the LORD, Behold, I will lay stumblingblocks before this people, and the fathers and the sons together shall fall upon them; the neighbour and his friend shall perish.

Jeremiah 6:21 belongs to the prophecies of Jeremiah 2 to 11, which Baruch wrote down at Jeremiah's mouth after King Jehoiakim burned the first roll. It stands in the larger section from Jeremiah 3 to 21 that denounces sin, expresses sorrow of heart over transgression, and makes touching appeals to return to God. Those appeals the mass of the people did not answer.

The verse sets forth the law in question as God's own law, standing in plain distinction from every other kind of law. It warns that those who reject that law will perish, with fathers and sons together falling upon the stumblingblocks laid before the people. Neighbour and friend alike shall perish under the judgment thus brought upon them. As part of the book's warnings and appeals, this warning about stumblingblocks and falling is peculiarly applicable to the present day.
