Jeremiah 6:22

Thus saith the LORD, Behold, a people cometh from the north country, and a great nation shall be raised from the sides of the earth.

The verse belongs to chapters 2 to 11, the prophecies dictated to Baruch at Jeremiah's mouth after King Jehoiakim burned the first scroll. Its meaning is plain as a terrible denunciation of sin, expressing sorrow of heart over the people's transgression and a tender appeal for them to return to God. That appeal is met by the mass of the people with complete unresponsiveness.

The people coming from the north country are enemies of God's people, for the north is the region from which Israel's ungodly enemies and oppressors came, so the northern people represent forces of evil opposed to God and his redeemed people. It stands with the warning that deceptive remedies and counterfeit healings are abroad, healing the hurt of God's people only slightly by proclaiming peace when there is no peace, leaving no true peace and no true health but trouble and a fall at the time of visitation. In the last days it shows God calling out a people to keep the whole law, including the Sabbath.
