Jeremiah 7:27
Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee. Therefore thou shalt speak all these words unto them; but they will not hearken to thee: thou shalt also call unto them; but they will not answer thee.
God was telling Jeremiah beforehand that when he spoke all God's words to them they would not listen to him, and when he called to them they would not answer him. The warning belonged to God's charge that He had commanded obedience so that it might be well with them and had sent all His servants the prophets daily since their fathers came out of Egypt, yet they did not listen or incline the ear but walked in the counsels and imagination of their evil heart, went backward and not forward, hardened the neck, did worse than their fathers, and became a nation that obeys not God's voice nor receives correction, with truth perished from them. Their temple worship was only an empty form made of no avail by idolatry, the abominations of Topheth, treachery, and shamelessness. Their refusal shows that violation of the Sabbath had always been general among the Hebrews.
Their willful refusal to heed would soon be punished by Babylon as the swift avenger, and their refusal to heed the prophets preceded Judah's downfall as an independent nation despite the good statutes God had given them. The verse reveals their desperate state of sin and why Jeremiah wept over them and was almost utterly discouraged by their utter lack of response to the messages God sent through him, reflecting their failure to respond to his appeals to return to God. Their darkness was their own choice, not God's neglect, just as those who reject the plain statement that the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord grope in darkness.
