Jeremiah 7:5
For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour; For if ye throughly amend your ways and your doings; if ye throughly execute judgment between a man and his neighbour;
The demand is for thorough amendment, a complete putting right of ways and doings and a thorough execution of judgment between a person and his neighbor, which means reformation of heart made visible in daily conduct and in fair, righteous treatment of others. Remaining and dwelling in the place, in the land given to the fathers forever, is conditional on that reform and on obedience expressed in just dealing, and religious claims, worship, and outward advantages do not secure continuance in the land when justice in everyday life is lacking. Trust in the temple and its services and ceremonies, in worship and religious claims, cannot take the place of repentance, purity of character, and righteous conduct, and cannot make up for neglected justice.
The just dealing required belongs together with not oppressing the stranger, the fatherless, and the widow, with shedding no innocent blood, and with not walking after other gods to personal hurt. It stands against trusting in lying words about the temple of the Lord while continuing in stealing, murder, adultery, false swearing, burning incense to Baal and walking after unknown gods, then coming into the house called by His name to claim deliverance in order to continue those abominations, thereby making it a den of robbers. Averting the impending judgment and the consequences of transgression required genuine repentance demonstrated in changed conduct, since continued sin could not be offset by ceremonial trust in the temple, its services, and religious ceremonies.
For those entrusted with God's work and in positions of trust, the requirement means repentance from selfishness and self-directed plans, faithfulness to God's principles rather than following personal desires and human judgment, and reliance on divine wisdom and power instead of human wisdom. The verse is a direct rebuke and call to men and leaders not walking in the light, whose selfish principles keep God from prospering His people until they stop resisting appeals, confess wrong, and change action. This includes church leaders who must admit and correct their wrong course rather than resist appeals, and an administration that disregards divine cautions, shapes people by human judgment, and perverts a ministry of truth so that its influence undermines divine testimony and must be changed.
