Jeremiah 8:12
Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? nay, they were not at all ashamed, neither could they blush: therefore shall they fall among them that fall: in the time of their visitation they shall be cast down, saith the LORD.
The verse describes the religious world at the present time and is fulfilled to the letter. It portrays a people in perpetual backsliding who hold fast to deceit and refuse to return. No one repents of wickedness, but everyone turns to his own course. They do not know divine judgment, yet claim wisdom while rejecting the word, so that the work of the scribes is in vain.
It means that those who claim to be teachers of the people and lead them astray are given to covetousness and deal falsely. Their injury is healed only slightly by those who proclaim peace when there is no peace. They commit abomination without any shame and are unable even to blush. Therefore they will fall with the fallen and be cast down at the time of their visitation.
This is especially fulfilled in the treatment of the original Sabbath, by refusing obedience, rejecting the blessed and sanctified memorial Sabbath, and honoring a spurious heathen idol sabbath exalted by human theories. Even while doing this they still assert that the law of the Lord is with them and that all who violate Sunday will be dealt with according to their laws. The verse comes as a present commissioned word calling people to amend their ways and doings so that they may dwell in the place God gives.
