Jeremiah 8:13

I will surely consume them, saith the LORD: there shall be no grapes on the vine, nor figs on the fig tree, and the leaf shall fade; and the things that I have given them shall pass away from them.

The Lord's sure sentence is to consume false religious teachers who profess to instruct the people while leading them astray through refusal of obedience to His Word. They claim to be teachers, yet they turn hearers from the truth by rejecting what He has commanded. Their judgment is certain, for the Lord Himself has declared that He will surely consume them.

The withered vine without grapes, the fig tree without figs, and the faded leaf mean that what God gave them will be taken away and pass from them. They will be left barren and withered because they heal the wound of the people only slightly, proclaiming peace where there is no peace. This stripping away is the fitting result of their superficial work, which soothes without curing and promises safety without obedience.

This description is being fulfilled to the letter in the religious world at the present time. It is seen especially in the setting aside of the original memorial Sabbath that God blessed and sanctified, in order to honor a spurious heathen idol sabbath exalted by human theories. While doing this, these teachers declare that the law of the Lord is with them and threaten all who violate Sunday.
