Jeremiah 8:14

Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defenced cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.

Jeremiah 8:14 describes religious teachers who profess to instruct the people while leading them astray, for they refuse obedience to the Word of the Lord even as they claim that the law of the Lord is with them. This word is fulfilled to the letter in the present religious world. That fulfillment centers especially on rejection of Jehovah's original memorial Sabbath which God blessed and sanctified, and on exaltation of a spurious heathen idol sabbath by man-made theories, even to the making of laws against all who violate Sunday.

Their assembling themselves and entering into the defenced cities to be silent there is the silence which the Lord Himself puts upon them in judgment. The water of gall given them to drink is bitter punishment, given because they have sinned against the Lord. They have healed the hurt of the people only slightly, crying peace, peace when there is no peace, and though they looked for peace and for health they found only trouble. They shall be consumed and shall fall among them that fall in the time of their visitation.
