Jeremiah 8:16

The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan: the whole land trembled at the sound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured the land, and all that is in it; the city, and those that dwell therein.

The verse portrays trouble and destruction falling because of sin against the Lord, when peace is looked for but no good comes, only trouble. The snorting of horses is heard from Dan, and the neighing of the strong ones causes the whole land to tremble. The cause is that the enemy have come and have devoured the land and all that is in it, the city and those who dwell therein. This invasion is God's visitation upon a backslidden people, silencing them and giving them water of gall to drink.

It is now being fulfilled to the letter in the religious world. It is true of those who claim to be teachers of the people, yet refuse obedience to the Word of the Lord and lead the people astray while still declaring that the law of the Lord is with them. Its fulfillment is seen especially in their course regarding the Sabbath, in setting aside the original memorial Sabbath of Jehovah which God blessed and sanctified. In its place they honor a spurious heathen idol sabbath of Sunday, exalted by man-made theories, while threatening with laws all who violate Sunday.
