Jeremiah 9:19

For a voice of wailing is heard out of Zion, How are we spoiled! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out.

The verse depicts the people of Zion wailing in shame and great distress because they have been driven from their land and their homes. The statement that their dwellings have cast them out means that sin practiced in a place is so repulsive that it makes the very land and even the houses sick until they expel their inhabitants. This was seen when the former inhabitants of Canaan were cast out for transgression, Israel was settled in the land only after taking a solemn pledge of obedience to God's laws and faithfulness to him as divine ruler, and Israel was itself cast out when it became as bad as the nations it replaced.

God would rather have the land lie as a barren waste than have it filled with people given over to works of abomination. The passage's call for mourners hired to lament as at a funeral presents lamentation turned into a paid performance. Paid religious pretense is like that hired mourning, outward wailing without inward reality.
