Jeremiah 9:2
Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men. Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men; that I might leave my people, and go from them! for they be all adulterers, an assembly of treacherous men.
The verse is the prophet's cry to leave his people behind and escape to a shelter for travelers out in the wilderness. It sprang from a naturally timid and shrinking temperament that craved the peace and quiet of a retired life, where he would no longer have to watch the continued impenitence of his beloved nation. That wish to withdraw was wrung from a heart in anguish over the ruin that sin had wrought.
