Jeremiah 9:22

Speak, Thus saith the LORD, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them.

The dead are to lie exposed in the open country, fallen like dung spread upon the ground and like a handful dropped behind the harvestman, scattered and left without anyone to gather them for burial. The picture is one of utter devastation, with the slain left unburied and strewn across the field.

The word stands among stern denunciations of sin uttered together with deep sorrow over the transgression of the people. It warns that punishment is soon to fall upon Israel for stubborn wilfulness and idolatry, to be executed through Babylon acting as a swift avenger.

The same image of unburied bodies covering the ground is a punishment for religious and crying sins, especially pride and oppression, to be visited in a future war in North America marked by great slaughter with many slain. It also meets its likeness where murdered Black people are left scattered through the land like manure, revealing both the vast scale and the brutality of the killings.
