Jeremiah 9:6

Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the LORD.

Their habitation is in the midst of deceit, with false speech and dishonest conduct forming the very setting in which their lives are lived. It is not a passing fault but the place where they dwell, so that deceit surrounds and characterizes them. Through that deceit they refuse to know God, and the deceit itself becomes the barrier that keeps them from knowing Him.

The verse belongs to a description of people who persist in their own way despite reproof and counsel. It exposes a selfish, ambitious and unfaithful course of leaning on human ideas and aims instead of divine wisdom and power. That course disregards God's principles while clinging to self-devised plans. It applies to men in positions of trust when they follow that course.
