Jeremiah 9:8
Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait. Their tongue is as an arrow shot out; it speaketh deceit: one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait.
The verse pictures the tongue as an arrow shot out to wound by deceit. With the mouth a person speaks peaceably to a neighbor, while in the heart a trap is secretly laid in wait. It stands as a warning against persisting in one's own way after repeated counsel has been given. Such persistence reveals selfish ambition and self-serving conduct, where harmful intent is concealed behind agreeable words.
The exposure reaches especially to men in positions of trust who disregard God's principles. Instead of submitting to divine guidance they rely on their own judgment and labor to advance their selfish ambitions. This course of double dealing is not to be excused or continued, but calls for repentance and confession.
