Zophar Speaks Above the Seaby emmanuel_higgins

Job 11:9

The measure thereof is longer than the earth, and broader than the sea.

The measure that is longer than the earth and broader than the sea is God's wisdom, greatness, being, perfection, power, and works, which are immeasurable and reach beyond all human limits. The earth and the sea are used to picture that vastness, yet even they cannot express its full extent. The same measure describes His love, which no science can explain and which grows more amazing the more it is felt, and the greatness of divine truth and the knowledge of God, which reaches as high as heaven and as broadly as the universe. God cannot be found out by searching unto perfection, and no finite mind, not even the keenest intellect or the highest flight of human thought, can fully comprehend His existence, character, and works, having seen only a glimpse of divine glory. Wisdom is found not by trying to penetrate His mysteries but by humbly receiving what He has revealed and living according to His will, and studying such truths of eternal life enlarges and strengthens the mind.

What the Measure Describes

The measure longer than the earth and broader than the sea is the measure of God's wisdom, greatness, being, perfection, power, and works, which is immeasurable and extends beyond all human limits. It is as high as heaven and deeper than hell, so that what can be done and what can be known are limited, and God cannot be found out by searching nor the Almighty found out unto perfection. The earth and the sea are taken to express that vastness, yet even they cannot express its full extent.

That same measure is the measure of God's love, which no science can explain and no wisdom can fathom. The more its influence is felt, the more amazing its immeasurable depth becomes. The same measure also describes the greatness of divine truth and the knowledge of God, whose extent reaches as high as heaven and as broadly as the universe.

The questions surrounding this measure about God's mysteries are set forth to expose the limits of human wisdom, to teach that God's purposes are unsearchable, and to call people to faith. They show how much there is, even among the common things of everyday life, that finite minds with all their boasted wisdom can never fully understand, which the most profound scholars can never answer.

Beyond Human Comprehension

The measure being longer than the earth and broader than the sea means that God cannot be found out by searching, and the Almighty cannot be found out unto perfection. What can be done and what can be known are limited, for the measure is as high as heaven, deeper than hell, longer than the earth and broader than the sea. His greatness and wisdom and works extend beyond the limits of human knowledge and understanding, so no amount of searching can fully discover or comprehend God, nor discover every divine mystery.

No finite mind can fully comprehend His existence, power, wisdom, character, works and perfection. The earth and the sea are used to express the vastness of that wisdom, greatness and works, yet they show that the measure lies beyond human limits. That includes even what He has made, for finite minds cannot fully understand even that, including how much there is even among the common things of everyday life that with all boasted wisdom can never be fully understood.

Even the keenest and most educated mind cannot fully grasp the Infinite One. The queries surrounding the measure are such as the most profound scholars can never answer. It lies beyond the reach of even the highest flight of human thought, and human beings have seen only a glimpse of divine glory and knowledge.

People may search and learn continually, and may discover more by searching deeply. Yet what remains beyond understanding is infinite, and the full extent cannot be comprehended. The questions about these mysteries are set to show the limits of human wisdom and to teach that His purposes are unsearchable, calling people to faith while they continue to seek and learn.

Seeking God Aright

The measure that is longer than the earth and broader than the sea sets forth a wisdom and being too vast to be reached by human searching, so no searching can uncover every divine mystery. Wisdom is not gained by attempting to force a way into hidden mysteries, but by humbly receiving what has been revealed and by living in obedience to that revealed will. Those who would know aright rest content with what has been made known concerning divine character and purposes, instead of exalting human theories into a standard by which Scripture itself is measured.

The same measure declares the greatness of divine truth to be beyond all earthly measure, longer than the earth and broader than the sea. The knowledge it opens reaches as high as heaven and as broadly as the universe. Giving the mind to the truths that pertain to eternal life enlarges its powers and strengthens its grasp.
