As the waters fail from the sea, and the flood decayeth and drieth up:
The failing and drying up of the waters is an image of death. The dead do not go immediately to heaven at death. Instead they lie asleep and unaware until they are awakened at the resurrection, with no sense of the time that has passed, so that a long or short time is to them only a moment.
This sleep of death is a blessed rest for the weary righteous. They remain in that deep slumber until they are awakened by the trump of God to glorious immortality. At that awakening the corruptible will put on incorruption and death will be swallowed up in victory.
