Job 14:12

So man lieth down, and riseth not: till the heavens be no more, they shall not awake, nor be raised out of their sleep.

Man lies down in death and remains asleep, unconscious and unaware, without waking until he is awakened at the resurrection. He does not at death enter at once upon his reward in heaven or upon his punishment, but waits in that unconscious sleep. Whether the time of sleeping is long or short, it passes without awareness and is to the sleeper only a moment. When he rises, his thought resumes where it stopped at death.

For the weary righteous this sleep is a blessed rest. They remain as sleepers until they are awakened by the trump of God to glorious immortality. So also a little child's death is a sleep in the grave, with no further sight of earthly things, until the Lifegiver calls her forth immortal in the resurrection of the just.
