A Ruined Man Clutches Bread in an Abandoned Townby emmanuel_higgins

Job 15:23

He wandereth abroad for bread, saying, Where is it? he knoweth that the day of darkness is ready at his hand.

The line belongs to Eliphaz's second address to Job, which comes inside the long dispute between Job and his three friends running from chapter 4 through chapter 31. In that address he levels new charges against Job by picturing the wretched lot of the wicked man. Job meets that address by maintaining his innocence and longing for death.

The picture is not a trustworthy account of all who suffer, for the friends often uttered true principles yet wrongly applied them to Job, since affliction is no proof of divine displeasure. What Eliphaz asserts here about Job and about God cannot be taken as dependable truth, because God Himself declared that the friends had not spoken rightly concerning Him and concerning Job.
